His show, Louie, is something else. For most stories (the romantic comedy for example) there’s a common narrative. People fall in love, have a bad patch, and get back together. And soon enough, there’s a movement to resist that narrative by creating its opposite. For a while, that’s pretty new and exciting, but eventually the anti-narratives get cliche, too. What I respect most about Louis, as a storyteller, is that he tells common stories but in a way that I’ve never seen before.

And, like, he’s funny.

I submitted my first Tumblr theme for approval.
I’m thinking of starting a kitty, or maybe a riff on a Tontine. A bunch of writers working on projects each put in, say $200. Whoever does not produce the agreed upon amount of work by the predetermined deadline loses his or her $200, which is then divided among or between the writers who do make the deadline.

Fantastic idea.
Watching a mahout lovingly bathe his elephant, I tried capturing the moment from the riverside but wasn’t satisfied with what I saw through the viewfinder. There was something lacking that made the image not do justice to the scene. I then climbed a tree with a branch extending out over the water and got my shot, which may have been my last as I almost fell off after taking it. I’m sure the beautiful elephant would not have been very happy about me falling out of a tree straight onto her stomach!

Neither of them married or had...

Mozart had only two children that managed to survive infancy. Neither of them married or had children of their own. The succession of all that talent faded in October of 1858. Somehow, I think both Karl and Franz knew they could not be as successful as their father, and that their children, too, would live in the shadow of his “curse.”

The real shame is not their lack of children, but rather the idea they were cursed in the first place. To be raised under the assumption that one can’t be successful on his own merits, and to die with it intact, must have been a terrible weight. It’s sad, not because we lost potential future generations of genius musicians, but because two men lived and died believing they had no self-worth.

Don’t forget that creativity is unbounded by any evidence to failure. It’s an individual pursuit. Creativity might be informed by the individual’s surroundings, but it always has the ability to grow far, far beyond.

The Virgins, f/2.8 at 1/15th of a second

Can I stay here a while longer, Samantha asked, and the boy agreed even though that was not what he wanted. And then she said, You should take a picture of us. Come on. You took so many of yourself, why not of us. Don’t be so shy. Fine, difficult. I did something for you here, now maybe you can do something for me? For us? (For us, the boy thought, for what? Boys and girls at sixteen are creatures of the moment, they care not about the future or consequence or the feelings of others. In a few years this whole time will be wiped from our memories and we will look back on the vacancy not with nostalgia but redemption, that we have become something else entirely.) I know it’s not that difficult. If you’ve been doing it for three years you should know what you’re doing. (She laughs, the boy thinks. She laughs.) (She tickles, she prods sweetly.) Go on, get the camera. That’s better. How do you think we should do it. From the bed? We could be laying in the bed together, under the sheets even. No? We could go by the window, maybe it would frame us, like a picture. (The whole dark world is our playground.) That’s good enough. Stop complaining, you. (She kisses sweetly.) Well, is it ready. Get closer. Clo-ser. We have to show that we’re together. Are you sure it’s set up right? I don’t want this to get messed up. Okay. You ready? And so on, until our boy, who would someday grow old and have a son of his own, who led his father down the wooded arteries of a migration burrowed in their history, of which they knew nothing. They were all broken, the whole progeny. Something in them was irrevocably due for repair, but had been neglected for generations. And so on. With the Polaroid camera they share to test exposures the boy quickly photographed himself. He promised himself, If I don’t look like my father I will be a better man than him. The boy shook the film to life. His father could be seen in the background, a shadow and a lost cause, a cicatrix on the boy’s memory. His face could barely be recognized in the small frame, and the boy’s, too, was blurred and shadowed in the low light. They become one another — boy and father — because they have always been the same.

The only way this song is bearable.
